Members of this order is so called beetles by having the sclerotized forewings (elytra), including longhorn beetles, fireflies, scarab beetles, and weevils. Coleoptera is the most speciose order among insects. They are herbivores, carnivores, saprophages, and fungivores. Some are agricultural pest that may destroy crops while some are famous such as fireflies and dung beetles. Early Egyptian revered the scarab as a god. Japanese use elytra of the jewel beetles as ornaments. Pachyrrhynchids, weevils in Lanyu island, are regarded as lucky insects. There are about 300 thousand described species and 6 thousand species in Taiwan. Approximately 194 thousand specimens are deposited at the TARI.
